What happened to Demonoid ?
An update : 02.02.2009 Quite a lot of people have stumbled upon this post as Demonoid went down again as of 1st Feb 2009. By the time I got to update this post the tracked is back with the following massage “We had a server crash last night which caused a few hours downtime. We are currently investigating the issue. ” . Therefore you don`t have to worry much. Everything is going to get back to normal
Three days have passed since my favorite torrent tracker Demonoid went off-line. It has happened before – and the cause was some anti piracy group forcing the site to move its server to Canada . But it is unclear what is the cause for the downtime now. I am following the new updates at Zero Paid but so far nothing is clear …
I have been using Demonoid for a long time , have a good ratio there and am very satisfied with the content I found on its pages. My only concern is that its admission is a bit too liberal – semi-private tracker is not always the best solution. May be when the site comes back it would become completely private – which I think is the way to go.
Update : According to the Slashdot and Teach Talk – the site has been shut down by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) – Torrent Freak supports this version . At the same time the net and the blog sphere become flooded with versions of what happened . On Demonoid’s irc channel, the only news that they are saying is that it is hardware related. However, no mods are currently on to find out what is really happening. Latest rumors from Wikipedia :
An unverified IRC chat was posted at The Circuit Box, which claims to be a discussion between a TorrentFreak reporter and a Demonoid staff member. This was released approximately 18 hours after the site went offline:
“Ok folks, here it is. Demonoid is down. It has been for around 2 day [sic] almost. The reason it is down is unknown, and is still unknown. It HASN’T I repeat HASN’T been RAIDed, shutdown, terminated, deleted, burned, mamed [sic], or thrown under a bridge.”
Demonoid is back online – it seems that it had troubles with the Canadian legislators – and the rumors are that from now on all Canadian traffic will be blocked at the tracker. Still for now I am getting :
The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems – We’ll be back soon
