coming of age movies list

Indeed, the best coming-of-age movies are almost always fish-out-of-water films; the water is our youth, and coming of age is how we acclimate ourselves to it

It is a movie where the central plot revolves around a person suddenly facing a life changing experience, trial or tribualtion. That person once was naive or childish or pre-pubescent is now suddenly older and wiser because of the experience. They see life and their place in the universe for the first time.  The title list below have been updated alphabetically

  • Greg T says:

I would recommend adding “Mean Creek” to your list. It’s an excellent CoA movie about moral choices, consequences, and taking responsibility for one’s actions. [Though the story is completely different, tonally it almost feels like a cross between "Stand by Me" and "Deliverance".]

  • skykid says:

    Heya SamiH and Greg T,

Thanks for your suggestions. I have included both titles in the post – also I got both movies for my collection – so I guess I will be watching them as soon as I can . In the meantime I would like to recommend to you another movie – Mickybo and Me – there is a review available – I saw it two days ago and its brill !

  • jungle boy says:

Cool site. You should check out the Argentine film, VERONICO CRUZ, also sometimes titled LA DEUDA INTERNA, about the friendship between a schoolteacher and an orphaned boy in a small, desolate, Indian village. It is a beautiful, poetic film, though rather slow-moving, so you have to be in the mood for that kind of film. No nudity or gay content.

More action-oriented is THE EMERALD FOREST, about an American boy kidnapped by Brazilian rainforest Indians and raised as one of their own. Great movie. Check out pics at http://www.richardandmimi.com/emeraldforest.html

  • skykid says:

Hello Jungle Boy and thanks for you comments. I will try to find the movies you suggested and will write reviews after seeing them. Hopefully I will able to find English subtitles as well – as this seems to be the biggest hurdle for me. In the meantime both of the movies you suggested are already included in the list.

  • Sami says:

    Missing titles:
    This Is England (2007)
    Radio Flyer (1992)

  • skykid says:

Fixed. Thanks once again Sami .

  • skykid says:

Thanks llk.I have already reviewed Machuca – http://tinyurl.com/2xfwwq – but forgot to add it in the list . Now that`s fixed.

Stand By Me, Juno, Igby, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Reality Bites and Cinema Paradiso seem to be missing. But I might have missed some of these titles in your list, in this case I apologize.

  • skykid says:

Thank you for your recommendations Shahanja – I will add the missing movies as soon as I can ( Stand by me is in the list )

Few years ago i saw an interesting movie, but i don’t know the name. The movie was about a little boy ,who was playing a role of prostitue, but that was not a gay movie. The boy used to stand on the road with a board that ‘i am available for rent’,only older girls took him with them .Now i can’t remember that was english or non english movie.Have you any idea what is the name of the movie?

  • skykid says:

Thanks for you comment cool boy . Will try to come up with the type of movie you are looking for . Can`t think of none now.

  • cool boy says:

Among all the coming of age movies in the list, any movie is Malena or Halfaouine type? IFf it is not possible to disclose hear, you can mail me.

  • skykid says:

You may want to check out Clement – a french movie similar to Malena. Its known these days – the only problem being that its in French and so far no subtitles are available. I appreciate your comments as we can discus whatever in here – just keep in mind that I try to maintain this blog with a PG rating ( there are readers below certain age …)- just use your common sense .

  • cool boy says:

Thanks for saying that ,now i’ll remember that.

  • chico says:

this blog is great.among these coa movies, which movies only 18+ can see?

  • skykid says:

Most coming of age movies are suitable for all ages. That`s the main idea in them to show how a person learns from a lived experience – coming of age as a term can be related to psychological development. Therefore I am not aware of a coa movie suitable for 18 + only – and if there is one I can assure you that it won`t be included in my list.

  • Silencem0 says:

i am looking for the name to a movie about 3 or 4 young boys who are vacationing at the beach in the summer during the 60′s I believe. the main character falls in love with an older woman who;s husband is off at war. do you know the name of this movie and if so it definitely should be added to the list.

    Thanks!

i just found the movie i was looking for. it is titled summer of ’42 released in 1971. it is an awesome coming of age story. a must see. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067803/

  • skykid says:

    Hello shannon,

I don`t know the answer of your question – but may be some of the reader of the blog would know it. I have also asked in the forum of skykid.org . To me the movie you described seems similar to Clement (which is a french movie – but am not that sure )

  • Gnn says:

Hello, GREAT site, delighted i came by this.

Basically i saw this film in 1994 or 1995 there or there abouts on a british tv station called BBC2 and Channel 4. but maybe you know of it.

i dont know the name of the film nor the ppl who were in it.
but this is the best way i can remember and describe it.
also i believe there are two similar films, one in colour and one in black and white.

basically there is this teenage kid with two woman i believe one to be his mother and one to be his aunt, and i remember them being on a train in one scene, then in another the boy is left with is aunt {i think} in a hotel and he sees her in the bath tub and she asks him to rub her with the soap next scene they are both asleep on the bed.

  • Gnn says:

Forgot to mention i think it was French or Spanish

  • skykid says:

Its probably Clement or Private Lessons

  • Gnn says:

Seen them both, so im afraid it’s neither.

  • skykid says:

I can`t help you then , but may be someone of the other visitors of this blog will be able to ?

    Good luck,

The Big Chill is a grown up coming of age film is it not?

  • TR says:

Any chance you can identify this movie? It was released around 1980, featuring three teen-aged boys who go to a beach house for the summer with one of the boys’ older sisters (I thought she was Jodie Foster, but it is not in her filmography). I remember:
–she drove a convertible and smoked.
–the movie is set in the 50s or early 60s.
–one of the boys has an affair with an older woman living in a nearby house on the beach.
Ok, that’s all I remember. Any luck? If so, please tell me! Thank you.

  • Ikarus says:

That surey is one looong list ! One can definitely find some inspiration here – and it is nice that you set up the links so there are reviews available for almost any film in the list.

And: I will keep my comments coming ;-)

I am suprised you did not include Love Strange Love-one of the most important Brazilian films made in the 1980's with a superstar cast of actors.

  • skykid says:

    Hello Star,

Of course the film Love Strange Love is in the list , but under its original title : Amor estranho Amor – which is probably why you did not see it.

  • sherin says:

has anyone here heard of a movie that goes like this -

a young girl living in the deep south with her not-quite-mentally-normal parents – looked after by her grandmother and black maid – grandmother dies – parents heartbroken – girl goes to town with her fashionable aunt (her mother's younger sister) – this aunt is responsible for causing the girl's mother to be the way she is – childhood accident – girl returns home.

this is a film is watched some 6 years ago on televison, and has remained a favourite. now i would like to watch it again, but remember neither the actors names, nor the film's name.

  • Gene4 says:

Hey – I really like your list. Also – some of my favorites are My Girl, The Man in the Moon, Blue Car, and a really hard to find made for television holiday special that came out in the seventies, called “J.T.” If you can find that one, I'll bet you'll love it.

  • skykid says:

Thanks for commenting Gene4 and for recommending ” JT ” – I haven`t heard of it – but if you can send some links to information about it or like the actors that were in it I will try to find it. I am now noting that none of your favorite films has its review at my blog – but its just time that restricts me . In any case this list will be updated as the blog grows …and I hope that you will stick around !

    Greetings,

    SkyKid

  • Gene4 says:

    Hey SkyKid –

I just discovered a link to “J.T.” – It may be that the movie is available for purchase on the net, probably VHS, but for now, check this out

Thank you for making this list! I am a teacher and I am looking for a movie for the class to watch that shows a culturally diverse coming of age story. All the others I found were white Americans. I appreciate the work this must have taken. You are definitely doing your part to contribute to a multicultural future! I think I will be showing Nobody Knows to my class. Thanks!

  • skykid says:

I am glad my list is going to be of use for you. I am going to update it with new titles as soon as I manage to get some time. I have a very short review of Nobody knows which you can fine here : http://www.theskykid.com/movies/moviesreviews/n...

I would like to invite you to come and share the feedback you get from your class when you show them the film. I for one would be very interested to read it and am sure that many of the readers of this blog would be too.

  • mrsfrans says:

Absolutely. I will share the responses. :)

    Great list!

What about “Lust Och Fägring Stor” a.k.a. “All Things Fair”?

I remember playing a wonderful art film in the 1980's when I ran the Roxy Theatre here in Idaho. The film was “L'isola di Arturo”. The English version is titled ” Arturo's Island.” Have you seen this film? I think it was distributed by MGM. Any chance you might include it in your cool list?

  • skykid says:

Hello. I did some research on that film and it is sure to be included in the next update of the list. I havenºt seen it – but the plot summary on IMDB is quite intriguing . “Arturo is a teenage boy who lives alone on an island. His mother died when he was born, and his father is always away. From time to time, Arturo's father comes to see him, but only to soon leave him again. He seems not to appreciate his son at all, but, nevertheless, Arturo adores his father. One day, Arturo's father arrives with his second wife, Nunciata, a seventeen-year-old girl with whom Arturo soon falls in love with… ” source http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056107/plotsummary

Thank you for letting me know about this film. Hope you will keep participating in the discussions at theskykid.com.

Once again, I'd love to say thanks for this list… it is always a good resource for me. And even today: lots of films I have not seen at all… interesting !
Actually I am now working on my little list, too – which is kind of a tough thing to do. Anybody who runs such a huge list (with pics and links) should know how frustrating this can be… But I am also trying to improve, once again. Please visit: http://ikarusvpn.wordpress.com/charts/

To see how I am planning it to look like (first 0-10 % completed)…

    Greetings,

    Ikarus

Alright, I completed my list in due time. Pffeeeeew, a lot of work. But I cannot help it, I love lists ;-)

  • skykid says:

Lists take a lot of time indeed which is why my hasn't been updated recently , but it will

  • H. says:

    Great list!!

    What about “Undertow” (2004) ?

  • skykid says:

I am glad you like the list. As about Undertow I did review it back in 2007 : http://www.theskykid.com/movies/undertow/ , but I guess I have missed it when I made the list (now fixed thanks to you)
