Up Close with Ajsil: theSkykid.com Interview

Ajsil interviewThrough the years,  theskykid.com has been able to interview some incredibly talented singers and performers. We have gained a lot of experience in the process.

Today we are delighted  to present to you two debuts:  That of our special reporter from Florida, Fernanda Mendieta, who  is conducting her first interview in this article and a rising young singing sensation who goes by the name of Ajsil.

Fernanda visited the young singer at his home.  There they  talked about a number of things, including his start as a musician, the working process of creating his video release on YouTube, as well as his hobbies and interests.

Fernanda: Hi Ajsil, how are you doing?

Ajsil: I am doing great. Thank you and theskykid.com for giving me the opportunity to do this interview.

Fernanda: I checked your YouTube channel and I am very impressed. I think you are becoming popular. How do you feel about that?

Ajsil: I feel great, happy and really excited because I keep getting more and more subscribers, viewers  comments and even more friends. This is telling me that people are liking what I am doing and, as a singer, I can’t ask for anything more.  It’s just awesome.

Fernanda: Ajsil – sounds really cool. Is that your real name or your artist name?

Ajsil: It’s my artist name.

Fernanda: How did you come up with it?

Ajsil: Well, I just played with the letters of my name and came up with Ajsil and I thought it sounded really cool. So I decided to tell my parents and we all agreed on it.

Fernanda: Who is your greatest musical influence?

Ajsil: My greatest musical influence is my dad. I grew up in a musical environment, because my dad is a music producer and he gave me the opportunity to stay with him during the studio sessions. He let me play around with his equipment, with his instruments and he also taught me how to do beats. To tell you the truth, this is how I think I got so musical and I thank God for giving me the best dad in the world!

usherFernanda: Do you have a favorite singer?

Ajsil: Yes!  My favorite singer is Usher. I think that he is a complete entertainer and he dances incredibly and I really like his style. Oh… and also I really like how he sings – it’ s awesome!

Fernanda: On some of your covers, I see that you play a guitar. How long have you been playing?

Ajsil: I have been playing the guitar for six months total.  I wanted to do a cover with the guitar, so I asked my dad and he taught me how to play the chords for You Smile. I really enjoyed playing and asked my dad if he could put me into lessons. I’ve been with a guitar teacher for about three months right now.

Fernanda: Besides the guitar, what other instruments can you play?

Ajsil: Like I said, I grew up in a musical environment and I have access to different instruments. So I can bang on the drums (by the way I learned that on Rock Band). I play a little bit on the keys and a little bit of bass.

AjsilFernanda: I noticed on your videos that you do your own harmonies. When did you notice that you could harmonize like that?

Ajsil: I have been harmonizing as long as I can remember and I don’t even have to think about it when I do it. It just comes out of me naturally. I love listening to the radio and, when I hear the melody of the tunes, I  automatically get their harmonies in my head. It’s just really weird – really hard to explain.

Fernanda: Of all the covers you have done, which one is your favorite one and why?

Ajsil: I like all my covers. But if I have to choose one I probably would go with Granade by Brono Mars. First of all, because it was a request from my fans.  They have been supporting me and I wanted to please them. Second, it had a lot of harmonies and I really enjoy doing songs with a lot of harmonies. And third, although the topic was kind of advanced to me, I just wanted to make my fans happy.  And Bruno Mars is a really good singer – I love his style.

Fernanda: Your videoes are so impressive. Can you take me through the process of how you make them?

Ajsil: We first start by picking a song that both my dad and I like. I then learn the lyrics and my dad does the beat, depending on if it’s live or not. Then we record the audio, then we record the video – my dad does all the editing. It takes probably one whole day and then we just pretty much upload it.

Fernanda: Because of Justin Bieber’s success, a lot of young artists are compared to him. How does it feel when people say you are better than him or not?

Ajsil: That is a good question. People should have their own opinion if they like me or not or if they like Justin Bieber or not. People should not be comparing because we are both different. I have a different style, he has different style – we both have different tones.

Greyson Chance - Waiting Outside The Lines Cover by AjFernanda: If you don’t mind, I’m going to put you in the spot. Some people say than in your cover of Greyson Chance – you use auto-tune. Is that true or not?

Ajsil: Like I said. Everybody is entitled to have their own opinion.   But do I use auto-tune? No !  As a matter of fact, I don’t use auto-tune in any of my covers.

Fernanda: I think we’ve talked enough about music. What other things you like to do?

Ajsil: I like to play basketball outside with my friends. Basketball is my favorite sport! I like to ride my bike, to skateboard and play video games that have do so with sports and music. And I really enjoy playing with my dog.

Fernanda: Do you have any heroes in your life and,  if so, who?

Ajsil: Of course I have a hero. No.  I’m not talking about superman – but she is intelligent, sweet and persistent. She is my mom and I am blessed with a mom like her.

Fernanda: How about we talk about school now. Can you tell me a little bit about it?

Ajsil: I’m in the sixth grade and I sing for the choir.  One of my favorite subjects is world history because, thanks to world history, we can learn a lot about different cultures. Another subject that I like is math …oh and I love to sing the national hymn on homecoming days.

Fernanda: Do you have a girlfriend?

Ajsil: Ha, ha! What kind of question is that? I’m only eleven plus I don’t want to get in trouble with my parents.

Fernanda: I’m just kidding with you.

Ajsil: OK. Let’s get this straight. Top Secret!

Fernanda: Ajsil —  it was great talking to you and I wish you the best in your career.

Ajsil: Thank you so much and I want to thank theskykid.com for this interview. And I want to thank my fans, subscribers and my viewers for helping me promote my videos.
