Scandinavian films about coming of age are known for their special twists in the storyline. And they come in wide variety – from serious to cute and entreating but perhaps a little bit weird. Child’s Play or An American Short Story is a short film released in the United States in 1980. The atmosphere of the film can easily be compared with some of the earliest adaptations of the books of Stephen King while, at the same time, the story is told in a manner not much different than one would expect to find in the tales of Hans Christian Anderson.

In the ten years since the film, Jet Boy, was released, interest in the film has continued very strong. Withstanding the test of time, the small independent Canadian production won its well-deserved place among the classics that shape the coming of age genre as a truly thought provoking, poignant drama.

Das Goldene Ding is a 1972 made for TV film, released in West Germany, which follows in much detail the Greek myth of Jason. It’s the retelling of the legend made popular by Jason and the Argonauts, using a new and unique approach to filmmaking and storytelling for its time. A “must see” for fans of the coming of age genre.
Zelimo is a coming of age film that tells the story of a young Jewish farm boy who embarks on a journey from Russia to America in search of a better life. The film, through flashbacks, looks at the boy’s haunted past as he seeks a new life in a new world.
